Become a Referee!!!
South Bay Soccer maintains a cadre of licensed referees: Annual Registration via Cal South is $80 SBSA referees are licensed by United States Soccer Federation registered through Cal South.
Youth referees or college students are paid, adult referees are volunteers. Referee registration is an annual requirement. Minimum age is 13 at the time of registration.
Referee year runs from July 1- June 30, reregistration is recommended before December 31, but must be done before June 15. If you desire referee you must be registered for the current year i.e. by Dec. 31. Several courses must be completed by the prospective referee: www.calsouth.com/new-referees Grassroots Referee course, Intro to safe and healthy playing environments course, on field Referee Preparation Training, and if you are 18 years or older Safe Sport (annually), and complete a onetime background check by Live Scan (reimbursed by SBSA, bring receipt).
Uniforms: Yellow jersey, shorts, socks, whistle, notebook are the responsibility of the referee. Kits are available from several sources. Pay is dependent on game level worked and position. Cal South mandates in order for their insurance to be valid there must be 1 or 3 licensed referees officiating. SBSA normally assigns 3 referees per match, this requires up to 12 referees per hour be available. Youth pay breakdown is $1.50 per minute split 40% center, 30% each assistant, based on the assigned total game time including half time. First year referees will be assigned U8 games to officiate until they are comfortable and evaluated to advance. This method ensures experienced referees are used for older age groups. Referees must interact with players and spectators and have the authority to remove any uncooperative individual(s), or cancel the match.
Director of Referees: Pat Goodyear (
[email protected]
) 8052150633 maintains a database with contact information of all referees and prospective referees. For youth referees parental contacts are also maintained unless released by the parent. The director of referee schedules, assigns, records, all referee assignments and forwards accumulated payroll to the Treasurer for payment at the beginning of the month. Referees that are also players, will be assigned matches that do not conflict with their playing schedules. Send Pat an email with contact information (name, emails, phone numbers) if interested.
